They don't do the pictures for free because they are feeling generous, they do them for free because they are unsure and don't know what to charge. A lot of them feel that they aren't that good (Ravensong for instance, who btw, is an amazing artist, and thinks he isn't) and are embarassed to charge anything.

None of the artist are greedy and imo they don't charge enough. It takes a lot of work by them to make these awesome pictures that they do for us and they totally deserve every gold piece and more that they charge. Even charging ingame gold, to me is getting them for free. If they were to do these in the "real" world, I'm sure some of them could make a ton of money.

I'm not surprised you posted this, in fact I expected for you to jump in and say this very thing. As someone who jumps on every free or undercharged artist thread makes you the greedy one.

Real world isn't all it's cracked up to be...at least not yet. I'm working on an auto skin that I'm told will be shown at SEMA sometime around Oct-Nov. I've tweaked the picture twice to change up key features, and still don't have a clue what or when I'm actually getting paid, which is my fault really I never asked I just started drawing. Right now drawing character art is much more rewarding and worthwhile.

a few thoughts...

* calling these artists greedy is just wrong. You spend your time playing guild wars, while they draw your character. I'm pretty sure this is not done in 5m. Most of the work I have seen around here takes hours of work. It's only fair that they get some type of compensation. How is it fair that you get to spend time playing AND get a commision done while the artist just gets to draw, not play, and nothing else.

I agree with Ryker that MOST of the artists that charge tips, do free work, or charge measly amounts do it due to insecurity, feeling they are not talented enough. If I were to jump on that, I would just be taking advantage of them, and that would make me the greedy one.

In the end, when they draw a commission, it is YOU that walks away with something amazing, a real image. They get virtual gold. The least we can do is be fair to them.

* Moving commissions to a sale section does not make much sense to me. Artists make art, this is the art section, they post commissions and everybody gets to see the art. The fact that they receive some type of compensation for their art is just secondary to the fact that we get to enjoy awesome pieces.

* I still firmly believe that every single artist here is perfectly capable to decide what works for them. If somebody wants to ignore campers, be it. If somebody camps and that makes them NEVER draw them, be it. If they want a cue, be it. If they want a waiting list, be it. If they need a lengthy description, be it. This is a free world, and nobody can make anybody do something they dont want to do, at least not here in guru.

There are some great suggestions on this thread, but let's give artists a little bit more credit and realize they are perfectly capable of deciding how to run their own thread.

And as fellow players and art lovers, let's be a little bit more aware of new artists that might be shy to post a fair price. If you have bought commissions before, YOU have a general idea of what fair is. Be fair.

I feel that is a bit of an overgeneralization. A guildie of mine was doing commissions on here before she got swamped with real-life stuff, and was originally going to charge, then realized she didn't need the money and offered her commissions for free. So yes, you are correct that many artists do free commissions because they are unsure, but that is not true in every situation.

I believe that even if you get a free commission you should always pay something.

Some people aren't as rich as others ingame. Just because Slayer doesn't steer towards the more expensive artists doesn't mean he is greedy. I have never seen him order anything that he can't put something towards.

If we can get it set up, I wouldnt mind having a child board for this section specifically for commissions. (The business end.) That way you wouldnt have to bend to the will of the sales rules (too strict for art imo) And would still have the seperation that is kinda needed. Pushing it to sales would just drive away more people than it would help bring in. =/
This would be acceptable as well, my thinking was more out of concern that WTS Commission type threads seem to be increasing in number as it is.... not necessarily a bad thing but I'd hate to see this section become overly "trade" oriented...

I think it's fine if people want to sell their services but could be helpful to have a child forum where the business end of it is done and the actual artwork is posted here (with nice interesting title other than "yet another commission thread")

I agree 100%. I really like Grey's new system of commissions - I really enjoyed coming up with a story for my character, and it certainly was worth it.
